PELA Partners with RCEM–MASA to Advance Mine Rehabilitation and Environmental Science at Krstov Dol
Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts
Pela Global Limited (“PELA” or the “Company”) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (“MoU”) with the Research Center for Environment and Materials at the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (“RCEM-MASA”), affirming the Company’s commitment to environmental stewardship, scientific integrity and responsible project development in North Macedonia.
As the Krstov Dol Antimony Project advances through exploration and resource validation, the MoU establishes a framework for potential cooperation with RCEM-MASA and an international group of researchers from North Macedonia, Europe and Australia on environmental research, rehabilitation and sustainable natural-resource management. The collaboration has the potential to position Krstov Dol as an important scientific case study in how legacy mining areas can be understood and rehabilitated using modern environmental science, while informing new approaches to the management of future tailings and mine waste to international standards.
PELA’s environmental programme is designed to establish a contemporary and scientifically robust understanding of conditions across the project area, including surface water, groundwater, soils, biodiversity and historical site infrastructure.
This work will support responsible project design and inform opportunities for improved management, reclamation and, where technically and environmentally appropriate, recovery or reprocessing of historical tailings material.
PELA Managing Director Nik Jovanovski said:
“Responsible project development begins well before any construction, or mining decision is made. It starts with sound science, contemporary environmental data, transparent engagement and a clear understanding of the site and its history.
Krstov Dol is a historical mining site, and its careful evaluation provides an opportunity to apply modern environmental, engineering and community standards to both future project design and the responsible management of existing site features.
Partnering with RCEM–MASA and leading international researchers gives us an opportunity to go further - to contribute new science on how legacy mining areas can be rehabilitated, and to develop approaches that could have relevance for former mine sites in North Macedonia and internationally.”
RCEM–MASA Head Academician Valentin Mirceski said:
“North Macedonia has a number of historical mining and tailings sites that would benefit from comprehensive assessment using modern environmental and analytical approaches. What is learned at Krstov Dol - through environmental characterisation, monitoring and the evaluation of appropriate rehabilitation approaches - has the potential to contribute to a broader understanding of legacy mining sites in the country and beyond.
We welcome cooperation based on transparency, scientific integrity and open scientific methods. The role of the Academy will be to contribute independent scientific expertise and to support research based on robust and scientifically sound approaches.”
